A Safer Student

It is very important that students feel safe in school so they can make the most of their potential. Every adult in the Academy is expected to play their part in this and we have comprehensive systems in place to ensure best practice.

Levels of Student and Family Support

The Form Tutor should be the first point of contact for any problems and can provide a comprehensive support package for students and their families. The Pastoral Support Workers, School Counsellor, School Nurses, Parent Support Advisors, Connexions Advisors and Education Welfare Officer are but a few of our internal services who can offer students a variety of support measures. The partnerships formed with other agencies through Richard Rose Central Academy's status as a full-service extended school has enabled us to access various support services.

Staff meet regularly to develop support packages for students requiring additional help. Working closely with students and parents, this may include referrals to, and liaison with, specialist outside agencies. As part of our extended services programme, we use the Multi Agency Support Team (MAST) and Common Assessment Framework (CAF).The MAST brings together different external agencies to ensure that the whole system to support students and their families is working with the same overall aim – to improve the outcomes for all students through early identification of need, early intervention and joint approaches to service delivery.

Attendance

Legally, all our students have to be in full-time education. Attendance is monitored every hour of the day and our electronic messaging service enables us to get messages to parents and carers quickly if a student is absent. Our Attendance Officer who works in partnership with the Education Welfare Service deals with problematic attendance issues.

Child Protection

In cases where the Academy is concerned that a student is being neglected, or is subject to some form of physical or emotional abuse, then it will follow Cumbria County Council's child protection procedures and contact Children's Services. Parents will be informed.

Friendship Groups

All students have a right to be happy at school and free from any form of intimidation. Monitoring of students enables us to rapidly identify any case of bullying, and we encourage our students to tell us if they are being bullied. "Talk in Confidence" is a scheme in which all pastoral staff are trained to help students in resolving relationship difficulties and to mediate in disagreements.
